NEUROFEEDBACK AND ALZHEIMER'S

Neuroscience research continues to reveal the brain correlates of the decline in cognitive function associated with aging or neurodegenerative disease. For many decades we have known that an active brain is at lower risk of disease, and promising evidence has emerged indicating that neurofeedback-based learning can be beneficial in fighting against age-related cognitive loss. Using qEEG brain maps, the affected circuits can now be identified and training can be performed effectively and with precision.

Dr. Robin Elisa Luijmes, a psychologist, and Dr. Sjaak Pouwels, MD Ph.D., a surgeon, studied people with Alzheimer's type of cognitive decline and performed neurofeedback. Over the course of two weekly treatments for 15 weeks their patients had reduced cognitive decline and some patients had demonstratable improvements in memory/cognitive scores. The research has been published in the Journal of Clinical Neuropsychology in 2016 under the article 'The effectiveness of neurofeedback on cognitive functioning in patients with Alzheimer’s disease'.
